0120 - Philip Abe Civil War Release Papers

At the end of the Civil War, all Confederate Troops were considered "Prisoners of War" until they and their unit were officially processed for release and given parole papers, even though they were not actually in custody. If you did not report for the parole you would be considered a fugitive and could be arrested. Here Philip is shown as a P.O.W.

This card shows Philip Abe granted a parole on April 19, 1865 by Capt. Simon Snyder, Provost Marshal. This took place at Winchester, Virginia.

This is Philip Abe's actual parole paper which he signed on April 19, 1865.
